BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is THE premier rock climbing venue in Western Colorado and one of best in North America. The canyon’s walls rise up over 2,ooo feet in places and rival those found in Yosemite, albiet with a much more adventurous and remote ambiance. Climbs in the Black Canyon range from 5-20 pitches in length, the easiest of which are around 5.7, though most are 5.9 and up.
The great Colorado Desert encompassing Western Colorado and Eastern Utah is a rock climbing cragger’s paradise. From Indian Creek, to Castleton Tower and on over to Colorado National Monument, the climbing opportunities found among the multitudes of red sandstone cliffs and spires is fantastic. This area is home to what is generally considered to be the best crack climbing on the planet. The unique desert towers make for a magnificent summit amidst the Martian like surroundings. The Kor/Ingalls route on Castleton Tower is deservedly included among Alen Steck and Steve Roper’s “Fifty Classic Climbs of North America” and should be on everyone’s tick list. There are also many sunny, warm “off-season” crags to practice and learn crack climbing skills during the autumn, winter and spring seasons.
