Ouray Other Areas

3/14/10

The Skylight area climbs are all in good condition now and most are fat. The infrequently climbed Killer Pillar is in prime condition: 5.8, WI 5+.

A certain visiting climber recently climbed the Ribbon, Bird Brain Boulevard and the Talisman, confirming that they are all “in.” All are proper mixed climbs and harder than they would be in normal conditions. The Talisman is M7 and was climbed by a 5.7-8ish rock rib to the right of the normal first pitch. The crux comes after the traverse, going up a corner to get onto the ice.

The Skylight area is in great shape, as well. Horsetail is fat. Dexter is fat. Anything sunny is not in good shape right now.

Horsetail Falls in December.

Skylight: Most of the roadside climbs are in. The Ribbon, Birdbrain and Talisman are not in. Conditions have not been favorable for these routes.
There is a fair amount of ice on Red Mountain Pass to check out as well, including Horsetail Falls, and Over the Rainbow.

Climbed BBB yesterday. A good mixed outing! There’s a teenie, weenie bit of ice in it. Crux on pitch 3, M6. Lots of M5, R!! Doubles to 3″ with a #4 camalot, med sized iron & 2-3 stubbies was used. Knee pads are nice. 2 raps into Ribbon (if safe), then v-thread to bolts. 6 raps.
