The Intro To Trad & Multipitch Rock Climbing clinic, one of our most popular rock climbing courses, equips you with the skills to efficiently and confidently climb long and challenging routes. Learn essential trad climbing skills and multi-pitch transition techniques for efficiently climbing longer routes with your partner.

Learn how to be an efficient trad climber

  • Throughout our 2-day Intro To Trad & Multipitch clinic we will cover the following rock climbing skills:

    • Advanced rock climbing movement instruction

    • Equipment selection

    • How to place trad gear

    • Anchor construction

    • How to belay a follower from above

    • Efficient multipitch transitions

    • How to lead a trad route

    • Multipitch technical descents

    • Introduction to basic rescue systems

  • Your guide will discuss trip logistics, your goals, learning outcomes, and conditions updates in the days prior to the course.

    08:00 Meet your guide at the trailhead in Unaweep Canyon and hike to the crag.
    08:30 A full day of rock climbing and instruction with a stunning backdrop of 500-foot granite walls in Unaweep Canyon. After introductions and goal setting you’ll begin by warming up toproping a few moderate routes to assess climbing abilities and get tips from your instructor to improve your movement skills. Next, we move into a discussion of placing and removing gear and building traditional anchors. The day finishes with an introduction to efficient multipitch transition systems.
    15:30 We’ll wrap up the climbing and instructional topics and hike out.
    16:00 Course finishes for the day and you can drive back to your campsite at the mouth of the canyon or your hotel in town.

  • 08:00 Meet your guide at the trailhead in Unaweep Canyon and hike to the crag.
    08:30 After a review and adding some building blocks for multipitch transitions we apply the skills by following multipitch routes in the vicinity. Students will be in teams of 2 climbers plus 1 guide. Students will practice cleaning gear, building anchors, lead belaying on multi-pitch routes and belaying a follower.
    15:30 We’ll wrap up the climbing and hike out.
    16:00 Course is finished, summary of skills and next steps.
