Walls vary in steepness from overhanging caves to vertical faces with technical climbing and despite it’s challenging reputation there has been significant new route development of moderate grades (and it turns out these routes are really high quality too!).   • Despite the popularity of Rifle as a world class rock climbing destination, Skyward Mountaineering is one of the few mountain guide services to offer guided rock climbing in the canyon. The routes are typically defined by complex climbing in steep terrain, demanding both power and endurance. Rifle Mountain Park hosts the largest quantity of 5.13 routes in North America and has earned its premier status for the quality and quantity of these challenging routes. Our guides will introduce you to the standard classic routes as well as modern hidden gems.

    • The geology of Rifle Mountain Park is a Leadville Formation limestone canyon with the majority of the climbing on dolomitic limestone (defined by a combination of calcium and magnesium carbonates). The steep and narrow canyon was formed by erosion caused by East Rifle Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River.

    • The land now referred to as Rifle Mountain Park was a popular hunting ground for the Tabeguache (People of Sun Mountain), a large tribe of the Nuche (The People, commonly referred to as Ute).

    • There are several limestone caves throughout Rifle Mountain Park and nearby Rifle Falls State Park with beautiful nearby waterfalls. In the winter, it is popular to explore these “Ice Caves” and Skyward Mountaineering even guides ice climbing on the pillars and columns of ice that form in Rifle Mountain Park.

  • While Rifle is famous for its difficult routes, it is a little known secret that there are actually plenty of high quality routes for beginner and intermediate climbers as well. In fact, new route development with a focus on moderate routes is an ongoing project and continues to expand each season. Beginners can learn sport climbing skills and fundamental outdoor rock climbing systems on the moderate routes in Rifle Mountain Park and hone their techniques for climbing on Rifle’s steeper routes.

  • Rifle is well suited for all ability levels, with moderate routes 5.8 to 5.10 as well as more challenging routes up to 5.14. The climbing in Rifle is almost exclusively bolted sport climbing on steep, pocketed, and blocky high quality limestone. Most of the crags are vertical, to slightly overhanging or even horizontal caves. Our guides can help you find climbs that match your ability and coach you through challenging sequences.

  • Yes! Skyward Mountaineering puts a lot of value in working with you to personalize every guided climbing trip, so details like the start time, hiking pace, photos, climbing instruction, multiday linkups at a variety of areas, etc. can all be adjusted to meet your specific goals. Your guide will reach out in the days before the trip to discuss these logistics, please let your guide know if you have any questions or specific requests.

    Additionally, our administrative staff are climbers and guides too and we’re here to support you through the whole process. If you have any questions before booking your guided climb or before the trip starts please reach out to us and we are happy to answer your questions.

  • We guide at a maximum ratio of 4 climbers per guide for toproping in Rifle Mountain Park. If you have a larger group we can likely add a second guide to the team to maintain a 4:1 climber to guide ratio. Contact us to discuss booking a rock climbing trip with groups larger than 4 people.

  • We have a detailed equipment list to help you prepare and pack for your trip. If you have questions about any of the gear please let us know, we’re happy to help make recommendations or clarify.

    Skyward Mountaineering provides all of the technical group climbing equipment, this includes ropes, anchor material, protection, etc. Many of clients are experienced rock climbers and prefer to use their own equipment, though we do maintain a small amount of personal technical equipment for climbers to use on our trips. Please let the admin staff or your guide know ASAP if you expect to borrow personal climbing equipment such as backpacks, harness, helmet, belay device, carabiners, personal tether, etc.

  • The prime seasons for rock climbing in Rifle are mid spring - summer - mid fall. At a higher elevation and tucked into a canyon, summers are warm but it is easy to chase sun or shade since the canyon runs north/south and the walls face east/west.

    Early spring can have wetness from seeps in the limestone cliffs, though much of the canyon is dry and climbable. Summer is the most dry conditions and fall can bring occasional stormy weather. In fact, it is even possible to climb mid winter during periods of mild weather on the sunny cliffs!

  • Our guides closely watch forecasts to have the most up-to-date and accurate conditions. If weather prohibits the team from climbing and your guide deems conditions to be unsafe/unreasonable for climbing we will work with you to reschedule your climbing trip.
