Where to Go Rock Climbing On The Front Range
One of the best things about rock climbing in Boulder is the variety. Within a relatively small area, climbers can choose from iconic sandstone formations, granite crags, long multipitch routes, technical sport climbs and beginner friendly toprope routes. Your guide will help choose the best climbing area based on your experience, goals, and weather.
The Flatirons
The Flatirons are Boulder's most recognizable features and one of Colorado's classic rock climbing venues. Their distinctive sandstone slabs rise dramatically above the city and offer everything from introductory climbs and scrambles to long multipitch routes and more technical routes.
For newer climbers, the Flatirons can provide an unforgettable introduction to multipitch climbing. And more experienced climbers can learn lead climbing techniques on long trad routes, such as the classic Standard East Face of the Third Flatiron while learning efficient systems from an experienced guide, or climb more challenging multipitch routes such as the exposed East Ridge on The Maiden.
Boulder Canyon
Just minutes from downtown, Boulder Canyon offers an enormous variety of granite climbing. The canyon is home to hundreds of routes, including sport climbs, traditional routes, and multipitch adventures.
Its accessibility and range of difficulty make Boulder Canyon particularly useful for guided instruction. Beginners can learn fundamental outdoor climbing skills on introductory routes, while experienced climbers can work on movement, crack climbing, leading or longer multipitch objectives.
Lumpy Ridge
Located near Estes Park in Rocky Mountain National Park, Lumpy Ridge offers a very different climbing experience from Boulder Canyon and the Flatirons. Its massive granite domes and long multi-pitch routes provide a beautiful high-country setting and an excellent escape from hot summer temperatures on the Front Range.
Lumpy Ridge is particularly well suited to experienced climbers looking for longer traditional routes and multi-pitch adventures. Because of the elevation, approach and route length, these objectives generally require more experience and preparation than a beginner cragging day.
Clear Creek Canyon and the South Platte
Depending on your goals and current conditions, your guide may also recommend Clear Creek Canyon or the South Platte. These areas add even more variety to the Front Range climbing experience, from single-pitch cragging and sport climbing to traditional routes and longer objectives.
Rather than committing you to a particular crag, we can choose the climbing area that best matches your ability, objectives and the day's conditions.

Multipitch Rock Climbing in Boulder
Boulder is an exceptional destination for multipitch rock climbing. The Flatirons, Eldorado Canyon and nearby Lumpy Ridge all offer classic longer routes where climbing multiple pitches leads to exposed positions, beautiful views and a greater sense of adventure.
A guided multipitch day is an opportunity to learn how to climb longer routes with personalized instruction from your guide. Depending on your experience, instruction can include belaying, multipitch transitions, rappelling, and climbing movement.
For experienced climbers, a private guide can also help you select and climb a classic objective that matches your ability and goals.

The Boulder skyline is dominated by these long sandstone slab climbs. The First, Second and Third Flatiron have several routes on the East Face with mostly moderate climbing, a great introduction to multi-pitch climbing or prep for alpine climbing objectives. The Flatirons also have lots of smaller crags hidden in the forest with great sport and trad climbing, some of which is single pitch toproping and others are classic multi-pitch routes such as The Maiden.
The Flatirons are composed of the Fountain Formation, a sedimentary conglomerate. Originally a horizontal layer, the Flatirons experienced uplift during the formation of the Rocky Mountains 65 million years ago.

A mix of granite trad and sport routes, from short roadside climbs to big multi-pitch adventures. We typically utilize climbing trips in Boulder Canyon for instructional climbing days or to introduce beginner climbers to rock climbing.
Boulder Canyon geology is defined by Precambrian Basement rocks, predominately metamorphic rocks such as gneiss and schist, which were eroded away by Boulder Creek 1.5 billion years ago.

Classic, steep sandstone walls with intricate crack systems and historic routes. Eldorado Canyon is a special place with hundreds of trad climbing routes, and a surprising number of high quality moderate multi-pitch routes.
Eldorado Canyon is a stunningly beautiful venue for hiking and climbing, with dramatic views of the steep lichen covered red cliffs. The geology there is the same Fountain Sandstone seen in the Flatirons, formed by the Ancient Rockies which eroded away and left a thick sediment pile over 300 million years ago. Around 200 million years later, another uplift event occurred and raised the steep cliffs of Eldorado which were carved out by South Boulder Creek..

Traditional granite multipitch climbing on domes and spires in a high-alpine setting. Lumpy Ridge is in Rocky Mountain National Park, just outside the town of Estes Park. Easily accessible in a day trip from Boulder, the climbing at Lumpy Ridge is a great opportunity to escape the summer heat. The Arapaho tribe called these dramatic 800 ft tall granite domes, Thath-aa-ai-atah which translates to “little lumps”.
