Mount Shuksan Alpine Climbing

Mount Shuksan offers several classic routes with different levels of technical difficulty. The Sulphide Glacier is generally the most accessible of the three primary routes, while Fisher Chimneys involves more varied technical alpine terrain and the North Face provides a steeper, more committing snow and ice climbing objective.

The Sulphide Glacier and the Fisher Chimneys route join for the same route up the summit pyramid and differ in the steepness of snow climbing on the glacier beforehand. Additionally, the Fisher Chimneys has 4th class rock climbing on the approach hike, whereas the Sulphide Glacier is just steep hiking on the first day approach.

The North Face combines the 4th class rock climbing on the approach with sustained steep snow and ice climbing on summit day. Additionally, the route is much more committing too and climbs the more challenging NE Ridge route on the summit pyramid (climbing up to 5.6).

The Sulphide Glacier is an introductory to intermediate alpine climb rather than a beginner mountaineering route. The climb involves a long approach, glacier travel, snow climbing, and technical terrain on the summit pyramid. Conditions can affect the difficulty, particularly as the glacier melts out later in the season.

We recommend that climbers have previous snow climbing and rock climbing experience before climbing the Sulphide Glacier or any other route on Mount Shuksan.

Winnie's Slide is a steep snow and ice section on the Fisher Chimneys route, bisecting the White Salmon Glacier and the Upper Curtis Glacier where there are bivy sites above and below.

At the top of the Upper Curtis Glacier, Hell's Highway is another steep section of snow and ice just before the junction with the Sulphide Glacier.

Both features can change from snow climbing to steeper or icy terrain as the season progresses.

The exact itinerary depends on the route and current conditions, though our standard itineraries for the Sulphide Glacier, Fisher Chimneys, and North Face route are 3 days in length. This gives adequate time for a long approach, summit day, and the hike out.

It is also possible to add extra days to a custom itinerary for additional training or linking up other routes on Mount Shuksan.

Mount Shuksan is primarily climbed during the summer climbing season, but conditions vary from year to year and throughout the season. Snow coverage, crevasses, glacier ice, steep snow, and exposed rock can all change as the mountain melts out.

We recommend climbing Mount Shuksan between mid June to late August for the most reliable conditions on the mountain.
