Alaska is home to some of the most challenging and spectacular mountaineering in North America. Vast glaciers, remote peaks, corniced ridges, pitches of steep snow, ice, and rock, make the Alaska Range an ideal destination for experienced climbers looking for a true alpine expedition. Skyward Mountaineering offers guided Alaska mountaineering expeditions for climbers seeking technical routes, classic peaks, and challenging objectives in remote mountain terrain.
Guided Alpine Climbing Expeditions
Beginner to advanced alpine climbing:
Ice climbing from WI4 to WI6 and mixed climbing M3 to M8. Steep snow climbs and corniced ridges. Rock climbing routes range from 5.8 to 5.12.
All guided mountaineering in the Alaska Range requires climbers to be in excellent fitness and have previous ice/rock climbing and/or glaciated mountaineering experience (dependent on the specific climbing objective).
Expedition length depends on the objective, though we generally recommend a 6-8 day trip. Some routes can be climbed in a single day from camp to camp, but our standard itineraries build in additional days for approach reconnaissance, weather contingencies, and flexibility to change objectives.

Guided Alaska Mountaineering Expeditions
A mountaineering expedition in Alaska combines the full gamut of alpine climbing techniques, from a high level of fitness, efficient climbing skills in a variety of terrain, glacier travel, camp life at basecamp or an on-route bivy, and patience waiting out inclement weather. Extended periods in remote terrain and changing conditions make Alaska climbing uniquely demanding, but they are also what make these expeditions so rewarding. What to Expect on an Alaska Mountaineering Expedition
Alaska mountaineering is expedition climbing at its best. A typical expedition starts off with a day of packing and sorting gear, transporting from Anchorage to Talkeetna, glacier flights into the mountains, and setting up a comfortable basecamp. We often will spend a day doing reconnaissance of a route before launching on the climb. Weather can dictate the schedule, and climbers should be prepared to wait for favorable conditions before making a summit attempt.
